Flashing before her eyes

Luke 1:28-38
Gabriel said, "Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with you. You will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name him Jesus. He will be great and will be called Son of the Most High ..."

Mary said to the angel, "How can this be since I have no relations with a man? ... I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done according to your word." And the angel departed.

Sand drifting through your hands, such is life. Young Mary, lifted out of Nazareth normalcy into God's hands, watches Jesus grow inside her. Jesus born, grows, Mary is proud, confused, finally even afraid as he challenges the church. Watching his accusers lie and watching him be silent, be arrested, tortured, killed. All she can do is watch. All she can do. Weep. Wail. Only watch.

What does she know of this so soon? Nothing, I hope. Let her rejoice and celebrate and ponder all the particulars of Jesus' birth.

Let her bring forth the newborn babe, and watch while he brings forth the kingdom of God. Earthbound, we are no more.

Come and enter the world you made, Lord. You are the king of glory. The earth and all its fullness belong only to you. And your love crowns my head with grace and peace.
