Genesis 3:20
Eve became the mother of all the living.

Brothers and sisters, listen to the cries of our mother: "Do you have your mittens on?" "You have to try everything on your plate." "That's your brother, don't treat him like that!" "Look ... look ... she needs you. Go help your sister!"

Call it the Mother Imperative - instruction in the art of living, especially in learning my place and my relation to the family. Eve's family is a big multi-racial, multi-cultural confabulation which by now covers the whole world, and I need to listen to Mom's direction if I'm ever going to get it right.

Today the church calendar honors Mary's anointing and call to become the mother of Jesus. Gabriel doesn't mince words: "You will conceive in your womb and bear a son (but I'm a virgin! ... hush, child ...), and you shall name him Jesus...The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you" (Luke 1:31-35).

Jesus' presence on earth changes it forever. God comes down. We have forgotten how connected we are, how Family we are, and Jesus brings us back. Brings us home. We all belong.

Thank you, Lord, for welcoming me and all of us back to the world we live in together as a family. Thank you for holding us and never letting go.
