Fathers and son

Saturday, March 15, 2008

Luke 2:41-51
Each year Jesus' parents went to Jerusalem for the feast of Passover, and when he was twelve years old, they went up according to festival custom.

After they had completed its days, as they were returning, the boy Jesus remained behind in Jerusalem, but his parents did not know it. Thinking that he was in the caravan, they journeyed for a day and looked for him among their relatives and acquaintances, but not finding him, they returned to Jerusalem to look for him.

After three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions, and all who heard him were astounded at his understanding and his answers.

When his parents saw him, they were astonished, and his mother said to him, "Son, why have you done this to us? Your father and I have been looking for you with great anxiety."

And he said to them, "Why were you looking for me? Did you not know that I must be in my Father's house?"

But they did not understand what he said to them.

He went down with them and came to Nazareth, and was obedient to them.

21 years later, Jesus wrestled with himself, with his Father, with Satan in Gethsemane. The Passover Feast was eaten, and now he would be brought again to the scribes and Pharisees. But no longer as a twelve-year-old prodigy.

Losing track of time and his parents, the boy Jesus spent the next three days in the temple, amazing the teachers with his wisdom. 21 years later, after his death on the cross, Peter says he preached "to the spirits in prison who once were disobedient" (1 Peter 3:19-20).

Joseph and Mary found Jesus and admonished him. He was surprised. He used the word "Father" about God, not just about Joseph. But he returned to Nazareth, obedient. 21 years later he returned to his body and his life on earth from the darkness of the burial cave.

Jesus' obedience to his parents and his father God enabled him to find his place on earth and in heaven. In the truest sense of the word, humility marked his words, his decisions, his actions.

You knew who you were every day of your life, Lord, and you lived that way. Your example stirs me up and makes me want to do the same. Thank you.
