Ride the wind

Tuesday, April 13, 1999

John 3:8
"The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the spirit."

In poetry and song we celebrate the wind. Spring breezes ruffle our hair, and tornadoes destroy whole houses. The wind is our nearly constant companion, even in its absence. "No wind today, light winds aloft, a lovely breeze off the lake this afternoon, high winds accompanying heavy rain this evening..." We measure it, but we can't see it.

In this passage which precedes the most well-known verse in the Bible, God invites me to ride the wind, climb on a kite and float lightly in the sky, going with him. The life of the spirit teaches me to be flexible and bend, to go with the flow of where God is going.

The Bible reminds me of what I don't know, that asking better and better questions is more the quest of life than getting better and better answers. When I am too certain of myself I become brittle and hard. I break easily.

Many of us are too hard on ourselves. As a fervent young Christian, Mike Bickle listed thirty changes to make in his life. But he was brought up short when he realized that God was only working on two of them!

So often I pray that I could cooperate with God. If I can do what God is doing, then we won't be working against each other. Whether he blows me to the dry desert or the rich oasis today, I will go with him.
