Pray, then act

Thursday, April 1, 1999

John 13:1
It was just before the Passover Feast. Jesus knew that the time had come for him to leave this world and go to the Father.

How could Jesus have known that? Chris is 18, and he's trying to decide whether it's time to leave home. He doesn't know. Margaret and I look at the work we're doing, and we wonder if it's time to move on. We don't know. How would we? We can't see the future.

Jesus gave up his omniscience to be one of us. He couldn't see the future either. Jesus prayed. He prayed all the time. Earlier (at the wedding in Cana, for example), he knew his time had not come. And now, because he prayed and trusted his Father, he knew the time was here.

So what we do, and encourage each other to do, is to pray and then act. Lean not on our own understanding, get still, listen, and then . . . act. Act like we know, even if we don't. God knows, let him guide us, let him make our paths straight. Do what Jesus did, and we will know as Jesus knew.
