Sinners in the hands of Jesus ...

Tuesday, December 24, 2002

Matthew 1:21
He will save his people from their sins.

from Kevin Perrotta...

"Officially Christmas isn't until tomorrow, but in many ways the Christmas season has been in full swing for weeks: parties, school events, decorating - and shopping! With the wave of Christmas activities reaching its crest, today is not the easiest moment for reflecting on Scripture. According to the angel, Mary's child is coming to deal with a big problem: 'He will save his people from their sins.' But how can you focus on your sins when you're up to your elbows in wrapping paper and keeping an eye on the clock?

"At less hectic times, thinking about our sins is not easier exactly, but inescapable. In some situations I deeply regret the fact that some of my sins haven't changed much over the years. God seems far away. And why not? He dislikes my sins more than I do.

"At such times I am glad to reread today's Gospel. Sure, sin puts distance between myself and God. But God does not let the distance remain. He has come among us. 'They shall call him Emmanuel,' the angel says, which means God is with us.'"
Walk with me through the mall this afternoon, Jesus, and then go home with me. Have dinner with us tonight, and thanks for being with me in the morning after Santa's come and gone.
