Drinking with Jesus

Wednesday, March 14, 2001

Matthew 20:17-28
"You don't know what you are asking...Can you drink the cup I am going to drink?"

Man sipping Old Milwaukee beer: "It doesn't get any better than this."

Facilitator at Holy Spirit revival meeting: "Belly up to the bar and have a big drink of living water! Fire water. Holy ghost anointed water. Come, Holy Spirit!!"

Hannibal Lector: ....(you don't want to know)....

Jesus: "Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day" (John 6:54)

What might sound silly, religious or outrageous in the mouths of men comes clean and true through the words of Jesus. But drinking with Jesus means drinking what he drinks.

"And what will you have, Dave?"
"I want what Jesus is having."
"Oh, that'll be a cup of crucifixion, flavored with rejection and ridicule."
"Ah.....oh...that's what being "buried in Christ" meant when I got baptized? What about the ..."raised to new life" part?"
And Jesus says, so simply, so softly, so shortly, "Follow me, watch me, wait...and see."

Jesus your cup fits awkwardly in my hands. Shape them new, Lord. The drink tastes bitter. Is this poison or medicine, Lord? Should I keep drinking this awful stuff? I'll just watch you, Jesus, I'll just watch you, and do what you do.
