In sight (it must be right!)

Romans 4:13
Brothers and sisters, it was not through the law that the promise was made to Abraham and his descendants that he would inherit the world, but through the righteousness that comes from faith.

Faith. Well-used word.

Faith is "confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see" (Hebrews 11). It is a "fundamental fact of existence: trust in God, the firm foundation under everything that makes life worth living" (Heb 11, The Message). "Faith perceives as real fact what is not revealed to the senses" (Heb 11, Amplified Bible).

Here's an idea from Richard Rohr: "Doubt and faith are correlative terms: people of great faith often suffer bouts of great doubt at many levels because they continue to grow at new levels" (Naked Now, p. 117).

I can believe an idea, but I have faith in a person. When I'm faithful to God, I let him take me to those "new levels" rather than gripping so tightly the edges of what I already know. So what I believe is not what I "have faith in." In fact, what I believe might change as I put my faith in God.

That can be a little scary at times. Does truth change as I grow? Well, Jesus has an answer for that. "I am the ... truth." I am true. Not what you know about me. Me. And I, Jesus said, "am the same yesterday, today and forever."

So I can put my faith in God, and what happens next is up to Him. Rohr says it this way, "Faith allows you to hold on - precisely because now Someone is holding on to you!" Just because He loves me, I have all the time I need to open up to that love.

"No hurry, David." I hear you, Lord; I hear you give me, and every one of us, more time than we can imagine to become what we already are - your kids.
