I like that in a club

Saturday, March 12, 2011

Luke 5:31
Jesus said, "Who needs a doctor: the healthy or the sick?"

John Bradshaw points out the attractiveness of inclusion as he describes the opening statement of every member of every 12-step group: "My name is Dave, and I'm an alcoholic, or a workaholic, or a codependent. My name is Dave, and I'm a struggling member of the human race. My name is Dave ... and I'm SICK! And so are all the rest of us who belong to the club.

I imagine saying to Jesus, "I'm sick. Come touch me." And my friends say, "Wait! I'm sicker. Come touch me!" And we might just end up arguing about who is the sickest, until Jesus tells us to pipe down. Smiling. Touching us all. Love. Be blessed. Enjoy. Sweet.

What a far cry from having it all together? I mean, what is there for Jesus to do after we get it all together? I love it when our pastors tell stories on themselves, and it becomes obvious that we are in the same boat. Let's hear about a little failure, along with the good gifts God has given. My life seems to have a Blessing track, and a Busted track. They run alongside each other. I get derailed quickly when I ignore either of them.

Jesus, be my locomotive. I'll stay on the track, and you pull me along. And then we'll just see what kind of power you put in me. Thank you for helping me find my place in the club.
