What would Jesus do?

Monday, December 11, 2000

Luke 5:17
Luke 5:17 "And the power of the Lord was present for him (Jesus) to heal the sick."

It's verses like this that help me realize my understanding of God is much more limited and uncertain than I like to pretend. When I think of Jesus I usually imagine a powerful God-like man who touches people and they magically become whole. I don't imagine him ever being "unable" to do that.

And yet this verse suggests that the "power of the Lord" might not always have been present, that it was in the wings for Jesus just as it is for us. This verse certainly lends more credence to the idea that Jesus was a man while living here with us. Christians usually cover Jesus with the God-paint, and thus the magician comes to life. And this magician has very little in common with us.

But Jesus says those who have faith in him will do even greater things than he (John 14). Paul calls us Jesus' brothers (Romans 8). And this verse clearly shows that Jesus was "dependent" on his Father just as we are.

I have always been able to see Jesus the baby as human, even Jesus the adolescent as human. It's much more difficult to see Jesus the man that way. But I must see him as human if I am to go beyond worshipping him and seek to be like him, as he wants to me to do. It's not enough to stand on the outside, admiring the pro. I must also take my own shots, and seek the power of the Lord to heal, and walk the talk myself.

Lord, I believe. You have called me brother, and you have called me to do the things you have done, and more. Heal the sick, raise the dead, cast out demons. Help my unbelief. Break through my attitude toward myself and show me the way you see me.
