Morning glory

Thursday, April 8, 1999

Luke 24:45
"Then he opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures."

I wake up. My eyes are crusty, I stretch my arms and legs and they are stiff. And so I go through my waking-up-steps, my morning stuff. After a shower and massage (dream on!), and brushing my teeth and making the bed and opening the windows to let the sun and air in, I am in tune with a bigger part of the world than when I awoke.

If I go out our front door, the street roars. Lincoln Avenue is the high road to the University of Illinois from Interstate 74. If I go out the back door, the robins are chirping and the sun warms my face. More of the world, right there to greet me.

No doubt the disciples already thought their minds were open, before Jesus touched them. After all, they had touched him; they knew he wasn't a ghost. But Jesus took them out the back door of their minds, and away from the rush and crushing noise of their own perspectives.

So, I want to spend more time in God's back yard where the flowers are growing and the birds are washing themselves and then letting the sun dry their feathers before they fly away, and where everything smells new! To do that I must learn the discipline of waiting for God to open my mind instead of thinking I already know it all.

Lord, open me up, all the way! Thank you for loving me.
